There are a number of ways to relax in Astana including golf, tennis, ice-skating and swimming. With temperatures routinely reaching minus thirty degrees Celsius in the winter, the sauna and Russian banya at the Sary Arka Public Baths and the hammam at the Spa at the Rixos are foolproof ways of warming up. If you prefer to be outside in the cold weather, try a spot of cross-country skiing along the River Ishim. Where else can you say you’ve skied a river? Or perhaps you would prefer to amuse yourself in the Ice City that appears between December and March next to the Duman Entertainment Centre, with replicas of some of the world’s most famous buildings. Located in the centre of northern Kazakhstan,Astana is also the perfect jumping off point for exploring more of this vast country. From Astana you can visit any of a

large number of towns including Petropavlosk, Karaganda, Semey, Pavlodar and even Oskemen (formerly Ust-Kamenogorsk) – the gateway to the Altai.

Alternatively, head out into the steppe. If you go to Lake Tengiz, part of the Korgalzhyn National Park, or to the Kokshetau National Park you can experience real life by staying with local families – something that will add immeasurably to your understanding of Kazakhstan and provide a welcome contrast from the fast pace of development in Astana. These areas are also a paradise for nature lovers and may even convert those of you who aren’t.

Excursions Around Astana
Borovoye

Often called Little Switzerland, the Borovoye National Park is one of Northern Kazakhstan’s most photographed attractions. Just three hours north of Astana, the park contains a number of lakes and wooded landscapes rich in flora and fauna. The region is known for its health-giving properties and a series of sanatoria and hotels on the lakes shores offer up therapies in addition to rest and relaxation.

Korghalzhyn

Despite being under three hours from Astana and possessing a collection of birdlife that has recently attracted a nomination for UNESCO World Heritage Site status, the Korgalzhyn area remains surprisingly unknown, even within Kazakhstan. Located at the crossroads of two migration routes, the vast wetland area is home to wolves, marmots and the rare Saiga antelope. However, it is the birds, and the pink flamingo in particular, that are the real attraction of this combination of virgin steppe and lakes. The area, most of which is protected as a National Nature Reserve, is home to the world’s most northerly population of pink flamingos, one of over 300 species of birds, which includes one of the largest wildfowl populations in Asia. Other notable residents include the Dalmatian pelican, the white-headed duck and a number of cranes and a variety of birds of prey.

Trips to Korgalzhyn can be organized through the Ecotourism Information Resource Centre (see Almaty Play section) or you can contact Ljudmila at the NGO Rodnik on OORodnik@mail.ru.
Telephone 8 3163 72 10 43.

Kokshetau

Possibly the birthplace of the domesticated horse, the area around Kokshetau is an area of outstanding natural beauty, home to mountains, hills, forests and rocky peaks broken up by small crystal clear lakes. As in Korgalzhyn, the Ecotourism Information Resource Centre can organize homestays within three villages in the Kokshetau National Park, which is sixty kilometres southwest of Kokshetau and home to a unique mix of Siberian and Central Asian flora and fauna. A trip to Kokshetau is a good way to spend a healthy and relaxing weekend. Trips can be organized through the Ecotourism Information Resource Centre (see Almaty Play section) or you can contact the NGO Ekos at akmol-ekos@mail.kz (Russian only).

Malinovka

Malinovka is a small settlement to the west of Astana, which was home to ‘Site 26’ or ALZHIR – ‘The Akmola Camp for Wives of Enemies of the Motherland’. Because Akmola played a major part in what Alexander Solzhenitsyn termed ‘the gulag archipelago’ (Solzhenitsyn himself was imprisoned in a gulag further east at Ekibastuz), it is well worth visiting this moving site just thirty minutes drive from Astana. The small museum documents the history of the prison camp system in Northern Kazakhstan. The Avenue of Tears at the former entrance to the camp with metal plaques listing the prisoners’ names, and the monuments at Malinovka are a moving tribute to the wives who were arrested during the Stalin era and imprisoned in the ALZHIR camp.

Any of the above excursions can be organized either independently or through the travel agents listed at the end of the Almaty Play section.

Skiing
Cross-Country

Much of northern Kazakhstan is classic Nordic skiing country - flat, with lots of snow for at least four months of winter once the snow falls in November (or earlier). Cross-country skiing is popular among outdoors enthusiasts often with the old wooden skis they’ve used for the past twenty years. However, it is wild skiing, finding your own routes and making your own tracks, with a minimum of provision.

Ishim River

In Astana people go skiing along the river in winter. You can rent passable skis and boots at a little lodge by the river in the main city park. It is next to the place where local people cut a hole in the ice and go for a bracing swim on weekend mornings – a good way, perhaps, to cool down after your skiing exertions.
